Too Close for Comfort followed the lives of the Rush family, which included the overprotective father, Henry (played by Ted Knight), his wife, Muriel (played by Nancy Dussault), and their two grown daughters, Jackie (played by Deborah Van Valkenburgh) and Sara (played by Lydia Cornell). The family lived in a large house in San Francisco, and the show often revolved around Henry's meddling in his daughters' lives and his unusual relationship with their upstairs neighbor, Monroe Ficus (played by Jim J. Bullock).
Throughout the show's run, various storylines included Sara's career aspirations as a cartoonist, Jackie's romantic relationships, and Henry's often misguided attempts at being a supportive father. The show also introduced recurring characters such as Emma (played by Jm J. Bullock's real-life sister, Lisa Bullock), who worked at the local diner, and Sara's boyfriend, Andrew (played by Ted McGinley).
Too Close for Comfort was known for its use of physical comedy and slapstick humor, and it frequently tackled controversial topics of the time, such as sexual harassment and homophobia. Despite some initial success, the show's ratings declined over time, and it was eventually canceled after its fifth season.
