The Legend of Jesse James followed the infamous outlaw as he and his brother, Frank, roamed the American West, evading law enforcement and becoming legends in their own time. The series was loosely based on historical events and also incorporated fictional elements to create an exciting adventure show.
Christopher Jones brought a charismatic edge to the role of Jesse James, playing him as a charming but dangerous man who lived by his own code. Allen Case played Frank James as more level-headed and pragmatic, often trying to rein in his brother's reckless behavior.
Other recurring characters included actor Robert J. Wilke as Sheriff Territorial Crittenden, who was in hot pursuit of the James brothers, and Ann Doran as Jesse and Frank's mother, Zerelda James.
Despite its popularity with audiences, The Legend of Jesse James was criticized by some historians for glorifying the criminal antics of its main characters. Nevertheless, the show ran for one season and 34 episodes before being cancelled due to low ratings.
