The Last Resort followed a group of misfit college students who were working in a run-down hotel located in the fictional town of Pickett. The main cast consisted of David Lightner (played by Larry Wilcox), who was the "brains" of the group and often came up with schemes to make money; Lillian (played by Stephanie Faracy), who was the chef and the only member of the staff with any real skill in the kitchen; and Skip (played by Michael Alldredge), who was the handyman and had a knack for fixing things around the hotel.

Other characters included the dimwitted housekeeper Ethel (played by Carol Locatell), the hotel manager Mort (played by Richard B. Shull), and the wealthy guest Amanda (played by Caren Kaye), who often found herself tangled up in the students' antics.

The show was created by Jay Tarses and Tom Patchett, who had previously worked together on The Bob Newhart Show and The Carol Burnett Show. Despite the talent behind the scenes, The Last Resort struggled in the ratings and was canceled after just one season.
