The Day of the Triffids follows the story of Bill Masen, a biologist who is blinded in an accident just as the world is struck by a meteor shower which causes anyone who observed it to go blind. With the majority of the population now helpless, aggressive walking plants known as Triffids, that Masen had been studying prior to the meteor shower, begin to invade cities and feed on the blind human population.

Masen, alongside a small group of survivors, must navigate the dangerous new world while attempting to find a way to stop the Triffids from taking over completely. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles including other hostile survivors and struggle to adapt to the new rules of survival in a world without sight.

The series stars Dougray Scott as Bill Masen and Joely Richardson as Jo Playton, another survivor who becomes Masen's love interest. It was first broadcast on BBC One in December 2009.
