Dispatched Connections: The Unlikely Bonds of New York Taxi Drivers

Comedy  United States of America

Taxi is an American television sitcom that aired on ABC from September 12, 1978, to May 6, 1982, and on NBC from September 30, 1982, to June 15, 1983. The show starred Judd Hirsch as the character Alex Rieger, the lead taxi driver, and Danny DeVito as Louie De Palma, the contemptuous and abusive dispatcher.

The other four important drivers are Elaine Nardo (Marilu Henner), the sweet, friendly lady who loves to act; Tony Banta (Tony Danza), the gentle former boxer who is struggling to find his place in the world; Bobby Wheeler (Jeff Conaway), the aspiring actor who tries to find work while driving a taxi; and John Burns (Randall Carver), the college-educated intellectual who drives a cab to make ends meet.

The show's plotlines often revolved around the drivers' personal lives, their struggles to make ends meet, and their interactions with passengers. The drivers work for the Sunshine Cab Company, which is located in Greenwich Village of New York City.

Despite Louie's spiteful nature, and the fact that he often does very little work himself, he somehow always seems to have an edge on the drivers. He is, however, amusingly resentful of anyone else he deems as having more power or prestige than he does. He frequently telephones the police department and other city officials to leverage his own position of (limited) power.

The show received several awards and nominations, including Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series in 1979 and 1981, and was ranked 17th on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time in 2002.
