Rawhide followed the adventures of a group of cowboys driving a herd of cattle across the American West in the late 1860s. Eric Fleming played Gil Favor, the trail boss who leads the cattle drive, and Clint Eastwood played Rowdy Yates, his impulsive and hot-headed second-in-command. The two men had a complicated relationship throughout the series, with Favor being the more experienced and level-headed of the two, while Yates often challenged his authority and took risks that put the whole crew in danger.

The other main characters on the show included Mushy, the clumsy and comedic cook; Wishbone, the cantankerous and hard-drinking cook; and Hey Soos, the Mexican wrangler who often acted as a translator between the cowboys and the locals they encountered on their journey. Over the course of the series, the crew faced numerous challenges, including stampedes, Indian attacks, and bandits looking to steal their cattle.

Rawhide was known for its gritty and realistic portrayal of life on the trail, and it was one of the first Westerns to show the harsh realities of the Old West, rather than just focusing on shootouts and heroism. It also had a memorable theme song, sung by Frankie Laine, which became a hit in its own right. The show was a ratings hit throughout its run and helped solidify Eastwood's status as a rising star in Hollywood.
