Maya follows the journey of Jeff, a young boy played by Jay North, who travels to India with his mother after his father, John, goes missing while on a hunting expedition. Despite being warned about the dangers lurking in the jungle, Jeff sets out to find his father with the help of Maya, a young elephant he befriends, and Rik, a local boy.
Along the way, Jeff and his friends encounter various obstacles and challenges, including hostile tribes, wild animals, and treacherous terrain. However, their determination and resourcefulness help them overcome these obstacles and bring them closer to finding John.
The show also explores themes of conservation and wildlife preservation, as Jeff learns to appreciate the beauty and importance of the animals in the jungle. Maya was filmed on location in India, and featured a cast of both American and Indian actors, including Sajid Khan as Rik and Prem Nath as the villainous prince, Ramal.
Despite receiving critical acclaim for its stunning cinematography and engaging storyline, Maya was ultimately cancelled after only one season due to low ratings. However, the show has since gained a cult following and is remembered as a beloved adventure series from the late 1960s.
