In the TV series, the young Chinese-American woman named Nicky Shen drops out of college after experiencing a quarter-life crisis and feeling disenchanted with her life in America. She decides to travel to an isolated Shaolin monastery in China where she starts learning Kung Fu from the masters there and immerses herself in the spiritual teachings of Shaolin.
After several years of training, Nicky returns to her hometown in America only to find it overrun by crime and corruption. She decides to use her martial arts skills and Shaolin values to protect her community and fight against the criminals who are terrorizing the city. Nicky becomes a vigilante of sorts, taking it upon herself to bring criminals to justice and to make her city a safer place.
Along the way, Nicky also tries to uncover the identity of the assassin who killed her Shaolin mentor and is now targeting her. She must navigate the complex web of relationships and power struggles that exist within the criminal underworld in her city in order to uncover the truth.
As Nicky struggles to balance her personal mission of justice with the demands of her family and friends, she must also confront her own identity as a Chinese-American woman trying to find her place in the world. Kung Fu is a story about finding oneself, fighting for justice, and the strength and wisdom that comes from the teachings of Shaolin.
