Chaos and Camaraderie on Hill Street

Drama  United States of America

Hill Street Blues aired for seven seasons from 1981 to 1987. The show was created by Steven Bochco and Michael Kozoll and produced by MTM Enterprises, the same production company responsible for The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Bob Newhart Show.

The series was groundbreaking in its portrayal of the lives of police officers, as it revealed the daily struggles and challenges they faced both on and off the job. The show also tackled controversial social issues such as drug addiction, domestic violence, racism, and political corruption.

The ensemble cast featured a variety of characters, including the precinct's commanding officer, Captain Frank Furillo (played by Daniel J. Travanti), his ex-wife and assistant D.A., Joyce Davenport (played by Veronica Hamel), and several officers of different ranks and backgrounds such as Det. Mick Belker (played by Bruce Weitz) and Officer Bobby Hill (played by Michael Warren).

Hill Street Blues was known for its innovative use of the ensemble cast, overlapping dialogue, and multi-story arcs. It also introduced the now-famous phrase "Let's be careful out there" which was used by Captain Furillo at the end of each shift briefing.

The show won 26 Emmy Awards, including four consecutive wins for Outstanding Drama Series. It was also named one of the greatest television shows of all time by TV Guide, Rolling Stone magazine, and the Writers Guild of America.
