The plot of East of Eden revolves around the rivalry between two families, the Shin and the Jang. The two families are wealthy and powerful, with a history of conflict and violence that stretches back generations. The Shin family owns a coal mining company, while the Jang family controls a shipping empire.

The main characters are the two brothers, Dong-chul and Dong-wook, who are separated after their father is murdered. Dong-chul is forced to flee and ends up joining a gang, while Dong-wook becomes a successful lawyer.
