CHiPs starred Larry Wilcox as Officer Jonathan "Jon" Baker and Erik Estrada as Officer Francis "Frank" Llewellyn "Ponch" Poncherello. The show followed the two officers as they patrolled the highways and freeways of Los Angeles, California, on their motorcycles.

Throughout the series, Baker and Ponch dealt with various situations and crimes, such as car chases, motorcycle accidents, and robberies. They also often had to contend with the antics of their fellow officers at the CHP's Central Division headquarters, including their cynical and gruff supervisor, Sergeant Joseph Getraer (played by Robert Pine), and the lovable, but bumbling Officer Barry "Bear" Baricza (played by Brodie Greer).

Alongside the show's action-packed storylines, CHiPs also featured various guest stars, including famous actors and musicians of the time, such as Richard Pryor, Tina Turner, and Bruce Jenner. The show's popularity eventually led to the release of merchandise, including toys and clothing, and even a spin-off TV movie in 1998.
