The series follows the adventures of Captain William Anthony "Buck" Rogers, who is frozen in suspended animation for 500 years after a life-support malfunction on his spacecraft in the year 1987. He awakens in the year 2491, to a world completely different from the one he knew. He finds himself in a world ruled by the Draconians, an alien race who are at war with Earth.

With the help of Dr. Huer, Buck joins the Earth Defense Directorate and becomes a member of the spaceship crew of the Starfighter, a ship capable of faster-than-light travel. Along with Colonel Wilma Deering, Buck fights against the Draconians and their leader, Princess Ardala, and helps defend Earth from various other threats.

The series is known for its futuristic special effects, colorful sets, and costumes, as well as its use of disco music in its score. It also features a cast of recurring characters, including Twiki, a diminutive robot assistant to Buck, and Dr. Theopolis, an intelligent computer in the shape of a human brain.

The show was canceled after two seasons due to declining ratings, but it has since gained a cult following and has been referenced in numerous pop culture works.
