Late Night Laughs with Barth Gimble

Comedy  United States of America

America 2-Night was a satirical talk-show that aired on NBC for three months in 1978. The show was a continuation of Fernwood 2 Night, which aired the previous year and was set in the fictional town of Fernwood, Ohio. America 2-Night followed the same format as its predecessor but was set in Hollywood.

Fred Willard played Barth Gimble, the clueless host of the show, and Martin Mull played his vain and self-absorbed co-host, Jerry Hubbard. The show featured improvised interviews with celebrity guests, mock commercials, and skits. Some of the show's most memorable characters included Tommy Velour, a lounge singer with a wig and cheesy outfits, and talk-show host Frank DeVol, who had a puppet sidekick named Happy Kyne.

America 2-Night was a cult hit with a devoted fanbase that appreciated its irreverent humor and satirical take on talk-shows. The show's writers included Tom Patchett, Jay Tarses, and Alan Thicke, who went on to create successful TV shows of their own. Although America 2-Night only aired for a short time, it has remained a beloved and influential example of the mock-talk show genre.
