The series follows Jim Kyle as he strives to expose the corrupt and oppressive regime of the PCD through his underground newspaper, "The Freedom Network". With the help of his colleagues, including the computer expert Dave Brett (played by Robert Lang), and fellow journalist Ben Wiley (played by Tony Doyle), Kyle uncovers evidence of the PCD's atrocities, ranging from mass surveillance and censorship to forced euthanasia.
As Kyle's fame grows, he becomes more and more of a target for the PCD, who use increasingly brutal methods to capture and silence him. The show is noted for its gritty and realistic portrayal of dystopian life, and for its commentary on issues such as government censorship, civil rights, and the power of the media.
The series ran for two seasons, from 1977 to 1978, and was cancelled due to low ratings. However, it has since gained a cult following and is considered a classic of British science fiction television.
