Zulu Dawn is a 1979 epic war film directed by Douglas Hickox and written by Cy Endfield and Anthony Story. It is a prequel to the 1964 film Zulu, which was also co-written by Endfield. The film was shot on location in South Africa and boasts an all-star cast, including Burt Lancaster, Peter O'Toole, Simon Ward, Denholm Elliott, and Bob Hoskins.

The movie tells the story of the ill-fated British invasion of Zululand in January 1879, during the first Anglo-Zulu War. The British, led by General Lord Chelmsford (O'Toole), have underestimated the strength and strategy of the Zulu warriors, led by King Cetshwayo (Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi).

The film vividly portrays the tension and arrogance of the British officers, who are caught up in their own sense of superiority and fail to properly prepare for battle. The soldiers are depicted as ill-equipped, poorly trained, and unprepared for the tactics of the Zulu warriors.

The Battle of Isandlwana, which takes place halfway through the film, is a stunning and heart-wrenching sequence that shows the British being overwhelmed by the sheer numbers and ferocity of the Zulu warriors. The battle scenes are expertly choreographed and filmed, using hundreds of extras and authentic weapons and costumes.

The aftermath of the battle is equally compelling, as the surviving soldiers retreat to a nearby mission station and prepare for a final stand against the Zulu army. The tension builds as the soldiers wait for reinforcements that never arrive, and the Zulu warriors begin to close in.

Zulu Dawn is a powerful and thought-provoking film that shows the futility and tragedy of war. It is a fitting prequel to the classic film Zulu and stands on its own as a great piece of filmmaking.
