Zorba the Greek is a 1964 drama film directed by Michael Cacoyannis and based on the novel of the same name by Nikos Kazantzakis. The film stars Anthony Quinn as Zorba, a charismatic Greek peasant who befriends a British writer, Basil (played by Alan Bates), and convinces him to abandon his life of prudishness and conformity.

Basil has come to Crete to manage a mine he has inherited, but he soon finds himself enamored with the island's carefree and hedonistic lifestyle, embodied by Zorba. The two men bond over the course of the film, with Zorba teaching Basil to dance, drink, and love life more fully. At the same time, Basil becomes involved with a local widow, but their romance is complicated by the island's conservative attitudes towards relationships outside of marriage.

The film is known for its memorable soundtrack, which features the famous song "Zorba's Dance," as well as its stunning location photography in Crete. It was a critical and commercial success upon its release, earning three Academy Award nominations and winning Quinn his second Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Today, Zorba the Greek is considered a classic of world cinema and a celebration of Greek cultural values.
