Griffin Keyes has worked as a zookeeper for many years and loves taking care of the animals. However, he is still single and feels insecure around women. His ex-girlfriend Stephanie (Leslie Bibb), who works at the zoo's gift shop, tells him that his job is holding him back from finding love. Feeling musguided, Griffin decides to quit his job and pursue a different career.
The animals at the zoo, who have become Griffin's closest friends, are determined to stop him from leaving. They reveal their secret ability to talk and decide to help Griffin win back Stephanie by teaching him how to be more confident and attractive. Their goal is to get Griffin to realize that being a zookeeper is a noble and exciting career.
The animals' lessons include everything from fancy dinners to dance moves, with the gorilla Bernie (Nick Nolte) serving as Griffin's main mentor. Meanwhile, Griffin's co-worker Kate (Rosario Dawson) tries to help him feel more comfortable in his own skin and shows him that he doesn't need to change who he is to succeed in love.
As Griffin puts his newfound animal-inspired skills into practice, he starts to gain the confidence he needs to pursue Stephanie and develops a stronger connection with Kate. Along the way, he learns that he doesn't have to change who he is to find happiness and that true love can be found in the most unexpected places.
