Kai is a young falcon who grows up with his father, Tendai, on a remote cliff face in the African savannah. Kai dreams of leaving his isolated home and discovering the world beyond. When a group of birds on their migratory path stop at his home, Kai takes the opportunity to join them.
The group Kai joins is headed to the bird city of Zambezia, a bustling and diverse community of birds from all over the region. When Kai arrives, he is immediately taken aback by the size and energy of the city. He is soon taken in by a group of young birds who teach him the ropes and show him around.
As Kai begins to explore Zambezia, he discovers the truth about his origins. His father Tendai was once a legendary warrior who defended the city against its enemies, but he left when Kai was young. Kai is determined to prove himself and follow in his father's footsteps.
The peace of Zambezia is threatened by an old enemy, a lizard named Budzo and his army of marabou storks. When Budzo attacks the city, Kai and his new friends must band together to defend it. In the process, Kai learns the importance of teamwork and community, and discovers that he is more capable than he ever imagined.
