Youth of the Beast is a 1963 Japanese crime film directed by Seijun Suzuki. It follows a mysterious stranger named Joji Mizuno as he arrives in Tokyo and quickly becomes embroiled in a gang war between two yakuza clans. Mizuno's past and motives are shrouded in mystery, and he uses his wits and fighting skills to play both sides against each other in an effort to uncover the truth behind a recent murder and gain revenge for a personal tragedy.
Along the way, Mizuno becomes involved with a nightclub singer and a police detective, forming alliances and betraying them as necessary to achieve his goals. The film features stylized violence, colorful cinematography, and a jazz-infused soundtrack, all hallmarks of Suzuki's distinctive approach to genre filmmaking.
Youth of the Beast has since become a cult classic, praised for its exciting action sequences and unconventional narrative structure. It is considered one of Seijun Suzuki's best films and remains a beloved entry in the yakuza film canon.
