Youth, also known as Fang Hua, is a Chinese drama film released in 2017 and directed by acclaimed director Feng Xiaogang. The film follows the lives of a group of young people who are members of a military performing arts troupe in Chengdu, Sichuan province, China, during the Cultural Revolution.
The film explores the coming-of-age experiences of each individual as they confront various crises in their lives. Suizi (Miao Miao) is the daughter of a high-ranking military officer who is charged with corruption, and she fears the stigma of this scandal will affect her life. Xiaoping (Zhong Chuxi) struggles with unrequited love for fellow troupe member Liu Feng (Huang Xuan), a talented musician who has his own battles to fight. He remains distant and aloof, but she pursues him relentlessly despite his disinterest.
Meanwhile, He Xiaoping (Elaine Zhong) is determined to resist the advances of the troupe's male members. But, she finally falls in love with Wang Chuning (Oho Ou), a handsome member of the troupe who is devoted to her, but their relationship is doomed when he becomes addicted to drugs.
As the characters move towards maturity, they are forced to confront their fears, passions, and desires in a time of political upheaval and social change. Youth is a touching and insightful drama that delves deeply into the complexities of human relationships, love, and personal identity.
