Hayley and James have been in a long-distance relationship for months and are excited to spend Christmas together. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, their plans fall through, leaving them both disappointed. As they say goodbye at the train station, they both feel a strong urge to surprise the other and make their Christmas special.
Without communicating their plans, Hayley boards James' train, while James boards Hayley's train. As they pass each other in the station, they both miss the opportunity to see one another, not realizing that they have just switched decks.
The rest of the movie follows Hayley and James as they each embark on an unexpected adventure with their new travel companions.
