"Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon" is a 2013 Chinese action-adventure film directed by Tsui Hark. The movie serves as a prequel to the Detective Dee movie franchise and follows the early career of Detective Dee Renjie, played by Mark Chao, before he became the legendary figure known throughout the land.
The story takes place during the Tang Dynasty, and begins with a terrifying sea monster attacking ships that ply the waters of the Imperial Sea. The monster's attacks lead to the death of a prominent official, which prompts the young Detective Dee to investigate the case.
As the detective delves deeper into the case, he discovers a larger conspiracy at play, involving the imperial court, high-ranking officials, and powerful sorcerers. Along the way, Dee is joined by a cast of colorful characters, including the powerful Shaolin monk Yuchi Zhenjin, played by Feng Shaofeng, and the beautiful courtesan Yin Ruiji, played by Angelababy.
Together, they unravel a web of deceit and betrayal which is threatening to tear the empire apart. With the fate of the empire at stake, Dee and his companions must use all their wits and skills to stop a dark force from bringing chaos to the land.
