The Fugitive's Pursuit of Justice

Crime,Drama,Thriller,Romance  United Kingdom

Young and Innocent is a 1937 British thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Nova Pilbeam and Derrick De Marney. The film is based on the novel "A Shilling for Candles" by Josephine Tey. Robert Tisdall (De Marney) is a young man who stumbles upon the body of a woman on a beach in southern England. As he tries to get help, he is spotted by a witness who assumes he is the murderer. Tisdall is arrested and put on trial.

At the trial, Tisdall's alibi is discredited, and he is sentenced to hang. He manages to escape from custody and, aided by Erica Burgoyne (Pilbeam), the young daughter of the local police inspector, he tries to prove his innocence. The pair make a series of daring escapes and evade the police. They eventually discover the real murderer and bring him to justice.

The film features many of Hitchcock's trademark touches, including the use of suspenseful music, innovative camera angles and visual misdirection. The climax of the film involves a chase scene through a crowded dance hall that showcases the director's mastery of tension and suspense.

Young and Innocent was not a major success upon its release, but it has since become regarded as a classic of British cinema and a prime example of Hitchcock's early work.
