You Must Be Joking follows the story of Samantha, a paralegal working in New York City who is dissatisfied with her life and feeling stuck. One day, she reconnects with her childhood friend, Carly, who has become a successful stand-up comedian. Carly encourages Samantha to take up comedy as a way to break out of her routine and find a new lease on life.
Despite being initially hesitant, Samantha eventually decides to take the leap and begins performing at open mic nights. As she becomes more involved in the comedy scene, she meets a group of fellow comedians who offer support and guidance.
However, Samantha's newfound passion for comedy creates tension in her personal life, particularly with her boyfriend, who does not understand or appreciate her interest in stand-up. Samantha must learn to balance her relationship with her newfound passion and decide what she truly wants out of life.
Throughout the film, Samantha deals with the ups and downs of pursuing a career in comedy and the challenges that come along with it. You Must Be Joking explores themes of self-discovery, following your dreams, and the importance of surrounding yourself with supportive friends and family.
