After Lisa's return to her hometown and family farm, she quickly realizes the many challenges that come with operating a sheep farm in a struggling economy. She sees how her brother Jim has been struggling to keep the farm afloat, and she decides to stay and help out.
One day at the local animal shelter, Lisa meets a border collie named Lucky. The dog had been abandoned at the shelter, and Lisa decides to adopt her. Although Lucky initially seems skittish and unwilling to obey commands, Lisa soon discovers that the dog has a natural talent for herding sheep.
With the annual sheep herding competition coming up, Jim and Lisa decide to enter Lucky. However, Lucky's leg gets burned during a forest fire, and it looks like she will not be able to compete. But with the help of Lisa's veterinarian friend, Lucky is soon back on her feet and able to participate in the competition.
During the competition, Lucky impresses everyone with her herding skills. But when a group of children get trapped in a barn during a severe thunderstorm, Lucky springs into action and leads them to safety. In the end, Jim and Lisa realize that Lucky is more than just a prize-winning sheepdog – she's also an invaluable member of their family and community.
