You Can Count on Me is a 2000 American drama film written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan. It follows the life of Sammy Prescott (Laura Linney), a single mother who works as a loan officer in a small town in upstate New York. Sammy's life is turned upside down when her younger brother Terry (Mark Ruffalo) returns home after years of being absent and living a nomadic lifestyle.
Terry's arrival causes tension between him and Sammy due to their different personalities and lifestyles. Sammy is responsible and organized, while Terry is impulsive and unreliable. Sammy, on the other hand, accepts and welcomes Terry despite his flaws.
The film explores the complex and emotional relationship between the two siblings as they navigate their past traumas, their present struggles, and their uncertain futures.
