The coming-of-age comedy-drama film Yes, God, Yes follows Alice, a 16-year-old Catholic high school student living in the Midwest in the early 2000s. She attends a Catholic school and volunteers at the local parish. Alice is taught that sex is a sin, and her sexuality is something to be ashamed of. She has a crush on another student, but she never acts on it.
One day, Alice decides to join an AOL chatroom called "God's Love". During the chat, the conversation turns sexual and Alice finds herself aroused. She then confesses her sins to her priest, only to be told that masturbation is a sin and she must confess it as well. Alice then goes on a journey of self-discovery as she tries to reconcile her sexual desires with her beliefs. She eventually attends a retreat where she learns to embrace her sexuality and her body.
The film stars Natalia Dyer as Alice, who is best known for her role as Nancy Wheeler in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. Yes, God, Yes was written and directed by Karen Maine, who based the story on her own experiences growing up Catholic. The film premiered at the 2019 SXSW Film Festival and was released in select theaters and on-demand on July 24, 2020.
