In X-Men: The Last Stand, a pharmaceutical company develops a "cure" for the mutant gene, which threatens to eradicate the mutant species. This causes divisions within the X-Men, with some members supportive of the cure, while others resist it.
Meanwhile, Magneto sees the cure as a threat to mutantkind and forms the Brotherhood to fight against it. They launch attacks on the company that developed the cure and also recruit new members, including Pyro.
Jean Grey, presumed dead after the events of X2, is revealed to be alive with her powers greatly amplified. She becomes the Phoenix, a force of destruction that threatens to destroy the world. The X-Men must confront her and make a choice whether to save her or stop her at all costs.
The film also explores the relationship between Wolverine and his past, as he discovers that an experimental procedure resulted in his adamantium skeleton and erased his memories.
In the climactic battle, the X-Men and the Brotherhood fight against each other as well as the government forces who support the distribution of the cure. The battle ends with the deaths of several key characters, including Cyclops, Professor Xavier, and Jean Grey. The film ends with the X-Men mourning their losses and contemplating their uncertain future.
