The movie is set in the 1960s, during the height of the Cold War. Charles Xavier (played by James McAvoy) is a brilliant young student at Oxford University, studying genetics and mutations. He meets a shape-shifting mutant named Raven (Jennifer Lawrence), who has been living in hiding, and together they set out to find other mutants like themselves.
Meanwhile, Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender) is on a mission of revenge. As a young boy in a concentration camp, he witnessed his mother being killed by a Nazi scientist named Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon). Now, as an adult, Erik is using his magnetic powers to track down Shaw and kill him.
Eventually, Charles and Erik cross paths and realize they have a common goal - to stop Shaw, who plans to trigger World War III and wipe out humanity. They recruit other mutants to their cause, including the telepathic Emma Frost (January Jones) and the winged Angel (Zoe Kravitz).
As the team comes together, they confront Shaw and his allies, including the powerful telekinetic mutant Azazel (Jason Flemyng) and the beastly Sebastian Shaw. The battle climaxes in a showdown between Charles and Erik, who have fundamental differences in their approach to mutant-human relations.
The movie explores themes of friendship, loyalty, and the struggle to find a place in a world that fears and hates you. It also sets the stage for the X-Men franchise, introducing many of the characters and story elements that fans have come to love over the years.
