World on a Wire is a two-part science fiction TV miniseries that was originally aired in 1973. It was directed by the renowned German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder and is based on the novel Simulacron-3 by Daniel F. Galouye.
The story is set in a futuristic world where a company called the Institute for Cybernetics and Futuristics is developing a virtual reality computer program called "Simulacron-1. Fred Stiller is a cybernetics engineer who is secretly enlisted by the Institute to replace one of its executives who has recently died under mysterious circumstances.
As Stiller delves deeper into the workings of the company, he discovers that many aspects of his own life may be part of the virtual reality program. He also uncovers a vast conspiracy within the Institute to use the Simulacron-1 program for their own purposes.
Stiller must race against time to uncover the truth about the conspiracy and the true nature of reality itself. The story explores themes of ethics, identity, and the blurred lines between reality and illusion.
World on a Wire was highly praised for its groundbreaking depiction of virtual reality and its influence on later science fiction films and TV shows, such as The Matrix.
