Without a Clue is a 1988 British comedy film directed by Thom Eberhardt and written by Gary Murphy and Larry Strawther. The movie stars Michael Caine as Dr. John Watson and Ben Kingsley as Reginald Kincaid, an unemployed actor who is hired by Watson to play the part of Sherlock Holmes in public appearances.
The twist in this film is that Watson is actually the mastermind behind all of Holmes' famous cases, with the brilliant deductions and insights belonging to him. However, he has kept this a secret from the public and from Kincaid, who believes himself to be the genuine article.
When Kincaid becomes impossible to deal with, Watson decides to fire him and go out on his own as the true detective. However, he soon discovers that he has built up Holmes' reputation so much that he cannot take credit for his own work without destroying the public's perception of the fictional detective.
As Watson and Kincaid bicker and scheme, they stumble upon a real mystery involving a series of murders by a criminal mastermind. Together they must solve the case and restore Holmes' reputation without revealing the truth behind the famed detective.
Without a Clue is a comedic take on the Sherlock Holmes mythos, proving that sometimes it's the sidekick who deserves the credit. The film is filled with witty banter, clever twists and turns, and plenty of laughs, making it a must-see for fans of the classic detective genre.
