Joe Enders, played by Nicolas Cage, is a worn-out Marine who has been assigned to protect Ben Yahzee, a Navajo "windtalker" played by Adam Beach. The two are sent to the Pacific island of Saipan, where they must use their unique skills to help the U.S. Army defeat Japan.
The Navajo language is used as a code by the U.S. military, and Joe's job is to protect Ben Yahzee at all costs, as he is one of the few who knows the code. However, Joe is not entirely comfortable with the assignment, as he feels that he is not doing enough to actively fight the enemy.
As they both witness the brutal realities of war, Joe and Ben begin to establish a bond of trust and friendship. But when the two are separated during a Japanese attack, Joe must use all of his skills to find Ben and get him safely back to the U.S. lines.
The film highlights the sacrifices made by the Navajo windtalkers, who were instrumental in helping the U.S. military during World War II. The movie was directed by John Woo and also stars Christian Slater, Frances O'Connor, and Peter Stormare.
