The two college students are Sarah (Emily Blunt) and a nameless male character (Ashton Holmes), who barely know each other but end up sharing a ride due to unforeseen circumstances. They're both heading home for the holidays, and the male character seems to have a crush on Sarah.
As they drive through a desolate road in rural Pennsylvania, they have a minor collision with another car, which seems to have come out of nowhere. After that, they start experiencing strange occurrences, like odd sounds and sightings of figures on the road.
The male character reveals that he knows of a shortcut through the woods, which would save them some time on their trip. However, as they take that route, they end up getting stuck in a snowbank in the middle of nowhere. They have no reception on their phones, and the car won't start, leaving them stranded.
As night falls, they start to realize that they're not alone. They're being haunted by the ghosts of people who died on that road, including a mother and son who froze to death, and a group of people who died in a bus accident. The ghosts are trying to communicate with them, warning them about the dangers of the road and urging them to leave.
Sarah and the male character have to work together to survive the night, as the ghosts become increasingly aggressive. They try to start the car, but it won't budge. They also try to walk to a nearby house, but it turns out to be abandoned.
In the end, they discover the reason why they were targeted by the ghosts, and manage to escape with their lives. The experience brings them closer, and they share a moment of intimacy before being rescued by a passing car.
