Willard is a psychological horror film that tells the story of a timid and lonely man named Willard Stiles, who lives with his elderly and controlling mother in a decaying mansion. Willard's father was a successful businessman, but he passed away, leaving him with no direction in life and no friends.
Willard's only solace comes from his unusual and obsessive relationship with the rats that infest his home. He begins to bond with the rodents and develops a unique means of communication that allows him to control their behavior. Willard begins to feel empowered by his newfound control over the rats and sets out to exact revenge on those who have mistreated him.
The first victim of Willard's wrath is his abusive boss, Frank Martin, who also happens to be his father's old business partner. Willard sets his rat army on Frank, and they savagely attack him, leaving him seriously injured.
As Willard's power over the rats grows, so does his confidence, and he begins to exhibit increasingly disturbing behavior. He becomes more deranged, and his actions become more erratic and unpredictable.
Meanwhile, a woman named Cathryn, who works for the local health department, begins to take an interest in Willard. She tries to befriend him, but her efforts are rebuffed by Willard's mother, who sees her as an intruder. Cathryn persists, and she eventually finds herself caught up in Willard's twisted world of revenge and madness.
In the end, Willard becomes consumed by his obsession with the rats, and he is unable to control them. The rats turn on him, and he is killed in a brutal attack. The film ends with Cathryn standing over his body, watching as the rats swarm around her feet.
