As the fire continues to spread, Jeanette struggles to make ends meet and support her son. She takes a job as a swimming instructor, but the financial strain and her husband's absence start to weigh heavily on her.
Meanwhile, Joe is left to his own devices and becomes increasingly aware of his parents' strained relationship. He begins to witness his mother's attempts to assert her independence and seeks refuge in a budding romance with a slightly older girl.
As Jerry's time away from home stretches on, he becomes more distant from his family and less engaged in the fight against the wildfire. Eventually, his absence and neglect take their toll on the family, forcing Jeanette and Joe to face some difficult decisions about their future.
