Poppy (played by Emma Roberts) is a rebellious teenager who lives a carefree life in Malibu, California, with her single father (played by Aidan Quinn). However, after her father goes on a business trip and fails to return, Poppy is sent to a strict boarding school for girls in England by her stepmother.
At the boarding school, Poppy struggles to fit in and constantly clashes with the other girls, especially the school's headmistress (played by Natasha Richardson). She also develops a love-hate relationship with one of the boys from the nearby boys' school, Freddie (played by Alex Pettyfer).
Desperate to leave the school, Poppy attempts to get expelled by breaking multiple rules and causing chaos. However, her plans backfire when she begins to form close bonds with her roommates, including her roommate, Harriet (played by Georgia King), who teaches her about British values and manners.
As Poppy becomes more accustomed to her new surroundings, she begins to question her old way of life and starts to think about what she really wants. Ultimately, she realizes that she doesn't want to be expelled and instead wants to stay and make the most of her time at the school.
The film ends with Poppy participating in a school dance off against the rival boys' school, where she and Freddie perform a choreographed routine and successfully win the competition. Poppy not only gains the respect of her fellow students but also the headmistress, who offers her a scholarship to continue her studies at the school.
