Harry Crumb is part of a family of famous private investigators, but he himself is considered the black sheep of the family due to his incompetence and clumsiness. Despite this, he is hired by the wealthy and powerful Eliot Draison to investigate the kidnapping of his granddaughter Jennifer. Harry's assignment is to collect ransom notes and negotiate the return of Jennifer.
As Harry starts his investigation, he begins to stumble upon clues that suggest that the kidnapping was orchestrated by Draison himself, who is using the crime to cover up his embezzlement from his own company. But Harry, oblivious to this fact, continues to bumble his way through the case, following red herrings and making grave mistakes at every turn.
As the deadline for the ransom payment approaches, Draison becomes increasingly desperate to cover his tracks and ensure that Harry doesn't solve the case. This leads to a series of wacky and chaotic confrontations, as Harry inadvertently stumbles upon and disrupts Draison's schemes at every turn.
In the end, Harry manages to solve the case and rescue Jennifer, with the help of his loyal assistant Helen and a few lucky breaks. Draison is finally exposed and brought to justice, while Harry finally earns the respect of his family and colleagues as a competent investigator.
