Who Are You? is a heart-wrenching drama about the struggles of a young boy named Joshua, who lives in poverty in an informal settlement in South Africa. His father, a highly educated man who fled Zimbabwe due to political turmoil, struggles to make ends meet by running a small spaza shop. Despite the challenges, Joshua holds onto his dream of becoming a BMX champion and using the prize money to provide a better life for himself and his family.
However, Joshua's world is turned upside down when he becomes the victim of a vicious xenophobic attack. His father and grandmother are killed, and he is left traumatized and alone. He is taken in by a kind-hearted social worker named Thando, who helps him to overcome his trauma and rediscover his passion for cycling.
With Thando's help, Joshua begins training for the BMX championship. He faces numerous obstacles along the way, including discrimination and bullying from other children in his community. However, with determination and hard work, Joshua is able to overcome these challenges and eventually reaches the championship finals.
The climax of the movie is an exhilarating BMX race, in which Joshua is pitted against his arch-rival, a wealthy and privileged white boy. Despite the odds being stacked against him, Joshua refuses to give up and eventually emerges victorious, fulfilling his dream and proving to himself and others that he is capable of achieving greatness.
Throughout the movie, Joshua confronts issues of poverty, discrimination, and xenophobia, which are sadly prevalent in many parts of Africa. Despite these challenges, he remains resilient and determined, and ultimately proves that the content of a person's character is more important than their background or circumstances.
