Alex is a troubled teenager who is struggling to find her place in the world, and she is infuriated by the way her teacher, Mr. Clausen, treats her. She is convinced that he is the only person who can truly understand her, and she becomes obsessed with him. However, after a failed attempt to seduce him, she realizes that she needs to get away from her boarding school and find answers about her past.
Alex's mother has never told her the identity of her biological father, but Alex is determined to find out. Armed only with a few clues and her own intuition, she sets out on a journey across the country to seek out her father. Along the way, she encounters a variety of characters, some of whom are helpful and some of whom are not.
As Alex gets closer to discovering the truth about her father, she also begins to understand more about herself and her own motivations. She realizes that her obsession with Mr. Clausen was not really about him at all, but about her own need for validation and acceptance.
In the end, Alex finds her father and learns the truth about her past, but she also discovers that her journey has been about much more than just finding answers. It has been about growing up and finding herself, and she emerges from her adventure a stronger, more confident person.
