Whiteout is a 2009 thriller film directed by Dominic Sena and based on the graphic novel of the same name by Greg Rucka. The movie stars Kate Beckinsale as Carrie Stetko, the lone U.S. Marshal stationed in Antarctica. As the only law enforcement officer on the icy continent, Carrie spends most of her days checking generators and doing routine patrols. However, her life is turned upside down when a body is discovered on the ice, leading her to investigate the first murder ever recorded on Antarctica.
With the help of an English geologist (played by Tom Skerritt) and a grizzled pilot (played by Gabriel Macht), Carrie sets out to uncover the identity of the killer. As she delves deeper into the mystery, she discovers that the victim was connected to a Russian diamond mine in Antarctica and that there may be more bodies to uncover. However, as she gets closer to the truth, Carrie finds herself in mortal danger, stalked by an unknown assailant who will stop at nothing to silence her.
Whiteout was filmed on location in British Columbia, Canada, with some additional scenes shot in Manitoba. The film features stunning footage of snow-covered landscapes and the desolate beauty of Antarctica, as well as tense action sequences and a gripping plot. While the movie received mixed reviews from critics, Kate Beckinsale's performance as the tough and resourceful Carrie Stetko was widely praised.
