Beneath the Surface of Society

Drama  France,United States of America

Louis Pinnock, played by John Travolta, lives a modest life with his wife (played by Kelly Lynch) and two children. He works at the local chocolate factory, and despite the praise he garners from his boss, he is still struggling to make ends meet. One day, while on the job, he meets Thaddeus Thomas, played by Harry Belafonte, a successful and powerful black CEO who he is tasked with delivering a package to.

While in Thomas’ office, Pinnock sees a glimpse of the life he could have had if he were black. Thomas’ office is grandiose, decorated with art and elegant furnishings, and he is respected by all around him. Pinnock is mesmerized by this and is caught staring in disbelief. This leads to Pinnock being mistaken as a voyeur.

The mistake costs Pinnock everything. He loses his job at the chocolate factory and he and his family are evicted from their home. Pinnock is now desperate. He needs to provide for his family and he believes that Thomas is the reason for his misfortune. In an act of desperation, Pinnock kidnaps Thomas and holds him hostage until he can get justice.

The movie is packed with social commentary about race relations in America. Director Desmond Nakano flips the script by making the white man the victim of social injustice and not the other way around. Throughout the film, it shows the effects of poverty and the struggles of working-class families in inner-city ghettos.

White Man's Burden premiered in 1995, and despite the all-star cast and a refreshing plot that broke norms, it received mixed reviews. Some praised the film for its commentary on race and society, while others thought the film was too provocative and potentially divisive. Nonetheless, it remains an important film in exploring issues of race and class in America.
