Whispering Corridors

Horror  South Korea

Whispering Corridors is a 1998 South Korean horror film directed by Park Ki-hyung. The movie was a critical and commercial success as well as the first installment in what would become known as the Whispering Corridors franchise.

The movie revolves around the life of a group of high school girls attending an all-girls school. They are forced to navigate the trials and tribulations of adolescence, but they soon discover something more sinister, a ghost that is said to haunt the school. The ghost is rumored to be the spirit of a young girl named Jin-ju Jang who committed suicide years earlier, and the events that unfold showcase the different ways in which the girls try to deal with this supernatural threat.

Throughout the movie, themes of friendship and betrayal are explored, as well as the difficult relationship between students and teachers. The movie also takes a critical eye to the oppressive nature of traditional Korean education, where conformity, obedience, and strict discipline are highly valued.

Whispering Corridors is an innovative and culturally specific horror movie that both entertained and shocked its audiences upon release. The movie is still considered a classic of Korean horror cinema, and its influence can be seen in many other Asian horror movies to this day.
