The film, released in 1992, follows a group of young people who have all fled from their homes and families due to various reasons. They form a makeshift family in the streets of Los Angeles, relying on each other for support and survival.
King, played by Dermot Mulroney, is one of the older members of the group and becomes a paternal figure to some of the younger runaways. He teaches them how to panhandle and gives them advice on how to stay safe in the dangerous world they inhabit.
The group consists of different personalities, including a pair of young lovers (played by Sean Astin and Lara Flynn Boyle), a drug-addicted musician (played by Ricki Lake), and a tough girl with a tragic past (played by Alyssa Milano).
As they struggle to find food, shelter, and avoid the dangers of the streets, they are also faced with the harsh realities of sex work and drug addiction. The film portrays the difficult choices and sacrifices that these young people have to make in order to survive day by day.
The film ends with a message of hope, as some of the characters find their way out of the streets and towards a brighter future, while others are not as fortunate. Overall, "Where the Day Takes You" offers a realistic portrayal of the struggles and dangers faced by runaway youth in urban areas.
