When the Last Sword Is Drawn is a Japanese historical drama film directed by Yojiro Takita. The film is based on the novel by Jiro Asada, and tells the story of Kanichiro Yoshimura, a samurai and a family man who is torn between his duty to his clan and his love for his family.
The film is set during the late-19th century Meiji era in Japan when the samurai class is being gradually phased out. Kanichiro Yoshimura is a low-ranking samurai who is struggling to support his wife, Nui, and their three children. He works as a fencing instructor to make ends meet, but his meager salary is not enough to provide for his family.
In desperate need of money, Yoshimura decides to leave his village and join the Shinsengumi, an elite group of samurai who work as bodyguards for the Tokugawa Shogunate. The Shinsengumi are known for their fierce loyalty to their master and their uncompromising commitment to the samurai code of honor.
Yoshimura's decision to join the Shinsengumi is not well-received by his fellow villagers, who view him as a traitor. But Yoshimura is determined to provide for his family, and he sees the Shinsengumi as his only chance to do so.
As Yoshimura rises in rank within the Shinsengumi, he becomes increasingly conflicted between his loyalty to the Shogunate and his desire to return home to his family. When his former clan comes under attack by the Shinsengumi, Yoshimura is forced to choose between his duty to his master and his deep-seated love for his family.
