Whatever Works is a 2009 American comedy-drama film directed by Woody Allen. The film stars Larry David as Boris Yellnikoff, a former Nobel Prize in Physics candidate who has given up on life and humanity in general due to a failed marriage and disillusionment with people in general. Boris is a misanthropic and bitter man whose sole pleasure in life is intellectual debate with himself and others. However, one day, he meets Melody St. Ann Celestine (Evan Rachel Wood), a beautiful young woman from the South who has run away from her conservative parents.

Despite their vast differences in age, personality, and worldview, Melody is drawn to Boris's quick wit and eccentric personality, and Boris is drawn to her youthful vitality and lack of cynicism. The two begin a relationship that surprises everyone around them, including Boris's friends and Melody's parents. As Melody's parents (Patricia Clarkson and Ed Begley Jr.) arrive in New York to rescue their daughter from what they consider an inappropriate relationship, they too become entangled in unexpected romantic relationships.

Throughout the film, Allen explores themes of love, acceptance, and finding happiness in unexpected places. Boris's intellectual superiority and pessimistic outlook on life is challenged by Melody's youthful idealism and innocence, while Melody learns to appreciate the nuances and complexities of life through Boris's guidance. As the film progresses, Boris and Melody's relationship develops in unexpected and often comical ways, ultimately leading to a touching and bittersweet conclusion.

Whatever Works is widely regarded as one of Allen's most accessible and enjoyable films in recent years, thanks to Larry David's charming performance and Allen's trademark wit and humor. The film received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, earning Allen an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay.
