Nick Marshall, played by Mel Gibson, is a successful advertising executive in Chicago who considers himself a ladies' man despite being divorced twice. He is confident in his ability to understand women and cater to their desires, but his attitude towards women is often disrespectful and chauvinistic.
When the firm's creative director position becomes available, Nick assumes he is a shoo-in for the job. However, the position is given to Darcy Maguire, played by Helen Hunt, a woman with whom Nick has a contentious working relationship. Following a night of heavy drinking, Nick has a freak accident where he electrocutes himself while standing in a bathtub, causing him to have the ability to hear women's thoughts.
Initially, Nick struggles with this newfound power, but he gradually learns to use it to his advantage in both his personal and professional life. He uses his ability to create ads that appeal to women, and he also uses his insights to win over Darcy and gain her respect.
Throughout the movie, Nick experiences a change in his view of women as he begins to hear their unspoken thoughts and better understands their feelings. He comes to value women as individuals and gains a new appreciation for the challenges they face in the workplace and in their personal lives.
In the end, Nick reaches a greater understanding of himself and the women in his life, resulting in a more meaningful and fulfilling existence for him.
