What About Bob? is a 1991 comedy film directed by Frank Oz and starring Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss. The film follows the story of Bob Wiley (Murray) a neurotic and comically clingy New Yorker who suffers from a variety of phobias. He becomes a patient of the egotistical psychiatrist Dr. Leo Marvin (Dreyfuss), who has just achieved fame with his new book "Baby Steps." Bob is initially an annoyance to Dr. Marvin, but after Marvin leaves for a family vacation, Bob follows him and becomes a member of the family. While Marvin struggles to rid himself of the nagging patient, Bob just can't seem to leave him alone. He continues to nag Marvin and make himself at home with the f reestyle family. Marvin's frustration escalates until he finally snaps and tries to kill Bob, only to end up institutionalized himself. In the end, Bob's persistence and humor slowly win over the family and even Dr. Marvin, who finds himself volitionally embracing Bob's "baby-step" motto at the end of the film. The movie deals with serious themes of mental illness and the struggles of those who are suffering from it, all the while keeping the audiences laughing with the help of wittily written dialogues and an impressively comedic performance from its lead actor, Bill Murray.
