Daphne, a free-spirited American teenager from New York City, learns from her mother, Libby, that her father is a wealthy British politician named Henry Dashwood. Eager to meet him and learn about her English roots, Daphne flies to London, but is disappointed to find out that her father is engaged to a woman named Glynnis Payne, who is determined to become a part of English high society.
Glynnis and her teenage daughter, Clarissa, do not welcome Daphne into their world, and Daphne struggles to fit in with the posh crowd. She also clashes with Clarissa, who is jealous of Daphne's relationship with her father and tries to sabotage their connection at every opportunity.
Despite the challenges, Daphne remains determined to form a bond with her father and understand her place in his life. Along the way, she also befriends Ian, a musician who helps her navigate the complexities of English culture and class.
In the end, Daphne discovers that her father values her as his daughter, and they share a heartfelt moment together. Glynnis is thwarted in her attempt to marry Henry and become a member of British high society, and Clarissa learns to accept Daphne as part of her family. Daphne returns to New York with a newfound appreciation for her heritage and a greater understanding of where she comes from.
