The protagonist of What? is a deaf actor named Jack who is struggling to find work in the film industry. He's frustrated with the lack of opportunities and the demeaning roles he's asked to play, such as a mute servant or a foolish sidekick.
One day, Jack decides he's had enough and takes matters into his own hands. He creates his own filmmaking team, including a hearing friend who can translate for him, and starts producing his own silent comedies.
The film follows Jack's journey as a filmmaker, as he faces challenges such as finding money for his projects and dealing with the prejudices of the industry. Along the way, he meets a group of deaf performers who share his passion for storytelling and help him realize his dream of making films that represent the deaf community.
Despite its heavy themes, What? is also a charming and funny film that pays tribute to the classic silent comedies of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. The movie features minimal dialogue and relies on physical comedy, music, and sound effects to tell its story.
