The couple Lois and Doug Riley have been struggling with the grieving process since the death of their teenage daughter. Lois spends her days in a daze, chain-smoking and barely leaving the house, while Doug throws himself into work and avoids his wife.
When Doug travels to New Orleans on a business trip, he becomes drawn to a young prostitute named Mallory, who reminds him of his daughter. As he spends more time with her, he finds himself becoming her caretaker, cleaning her run-down apartment and buying her clothes and food.
Despite trying to keep his relationship with Mallory platonic, Doug's actions begin to have consequences that threaten his marriage and his job. Lois eventually discovers Doug's secret and, after some initial resistance, agrees to join him in New Orleans to help care for Mallory.
As the three of them navigate their unlikely bond, they confront their personal demons and begin to heal from the trauma that has kept them stuck for years. Through their connection with Mallory, the Rileys discover a renewed sense of purpose and hope for their future.
